*Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants with a GPA between 2.75 and 2.99 may be considered for provisional admission to the three-year program and limited to 9 credit hours in their first semester. Consult with your program advisor for more information.

Our program prepares advanced social work leaders for a changing world.

The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at New Mexico State University is to prepare graduates to promote human and social well-being through ethical, theoretically based, and evidence-informed advanced generalist social work practice with individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities in the culturally diverse environment of the Southwest, the United States, and the world.

The MSW program is committed to serving people impacted by poverty and oppression through the promotion of empowerment, cultural humility and competence, and social and economic justice.

Program Goals

To prepare graduates for advanced generalist social work practice that is responsive to rapidly changing environments.
To prepare graduates for multidimensional social work practice through the integration of theoretical perspectives, empirical evidence, and professional experience.
To prepare graduates who are committed to social justice and ethical practice in complex settings.
To prepare graduates who are committed to continuing their professional development, leadership, and contribution to the profession.
To prepare graduates who employ a strengths-based, culturally humble approach to practice with populations and communities of the Southwest.

Curriculum & Learning Experience

Advanced Generalist Curriculum

The MSW Program provides academic and fieldwork education with an emphasis on advanced generalist practice in multicultural settings with vulnerable populations. Students are prepared to practice across a full range of social work roles and settings, from direct clinical practice to community and policy work.

Advanced generalist concentration focused on leadership and multidimensional practice.
Opportunities to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
Integration of classroom learning with practicum education experiences.
Elective opportunities that allow students to tailor areas of focus and professional growth.
Available in-person on the Las Cruces campus and online through NMSU Global Campus.

Dual Degree Opportunity

MSW + MPH Dual Degree Program

Combine advanced social work practice with public health leadership through NMSU’s dual degree pathway. Students gain interdisciplinary training that prepares them to address complex community challenges through both direct practice and systems-level change.
