How to Apply – MSW Program

2. Submit Required Materials
  • Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts from all colleges/universities attended. International transcripts require a certified English evaluation by a professional translation service or NACES-recognized credential evaluation agency. A list of participating members can be found at NACES.
  • Resume/CV
  • Letters of Reference (2): Should address academic abilities, professional experience, and potential for success. Transfer applicants must include at least one reference from a prior Social Work faculty/professional confirming good standing.
  • Personal Statement (≤5 pages): Address:
  • Your interest in social work and career goals aligned with NMSU’s mission.
  • How your goals/values align with the NASW Code of Ethics, especially social justice and dignity/worth of the person, including experience with diverse populations and commitment to challenging social injustice.
  • Your plan to manage the responsibilities of completing the MSW program, including coursework and practicum.
  • (Optional) Address any past legal or academic issues and how they’ve been addressed.
  • AI Use: If AI assists with your statement, include an attribution describing the tool and its use.

Before Applying
Consider all program options and choose one that fits your needs. All programs require some synchronous class attendance and practicum completion.

Program Options

MSW Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 (2.75–2.99 considered for provisional admission; limited to 9 credits in first semester)

Advanced Standing Eligibility

  • BSW from a CSWE-accredited program within 5 years
  • Cumulative GPA ≥3.0; BSW coursework GPA ≥3.5 (no provisional admission)
  • Preferred: 2 years social work-related experience (employment, volunteer work, or leadership activities)
  • Must be able to begin courses in summer (3 credits before fall cohort)

Application and Review Timeline
The MSW program admits new cohorts every fall. Apply early for best consideration.

  • Application Opens: 09/15/2025
  • Review Begins: 10/15/2025 (decisions usually within 8 weeks)
  • Application Deadline: 01/15/2026
  • Late Application Window: 01/15/2026–02/15/2026 (review not guaranteed)
  • Online Application Closes: 02/15/2026
  • Admission Cycle Complete: 04/15/2026

Advanced Standing Applications
In addition to standard materials, submit:

  • Final BSW Practicum Evaluation (mid-term acceptable)
  • Sample Case Study (instructions pages 13–14)

Dual MPH/MSW Applications

  • Submit separate applications to MPH and MSW programs
  • Indicate intention to enroll in the 3-Year MSW program
  • Email MSW Program Coordinator (Dr. Sterling Brown: shbrown@nmsu.edu) to confirm intent if admitted to both programs

International Applicants

  • Admitted to Main Campus 3-Year Program
  • Limited Graduate Assistantships; may need to defer if visa not secured before August 1
