SBIRT @ NMSU has contracted with Kognito Solutions LLC to provide students receiving SBIRT training with an online simulation experience to practice and assess their screening and brief intervention skills. Kognito creates digital experiences using the latest principles behind neuroscience, social cognition, and game mechanics to create simulated conversations with virtual humans where people learn, practice and self-assess their ability to manage conversations that can lead to positive changes in social, emotional, and physical health.
Kognito’s SBI with Adolescents is a conversation simulation designed to prepare health professionals to screen young patients/clients for substance use, conduct brief interventions using evidence-based principles of motivational interviewing, and, when necessary, refer patients to further support. This simulation helps practitioners learn basic facts about adolescent substance use, as well as techniques to screen patients/clients and conduct brief interventions to drive positive change in health behaviors. Using techniques drawn from motivational interviewing, learners can engage each virtual patient in a collaborative, patient-centered conversation to integrate behavioral health in routine care for all populations.
- Screen patients/clients using evidence-based tools
- Conduct brief interventions using motivational interviewing to build patients’/clients’ trust and motivation to implement lifestyle changes
- Make collaborative action plans with patients/clients
- Refer patients/clients to treatment service and follow up on referrals
The first two adolescent simulations allow health professionals to practice conversations regarding alcohol and marijuana use. Participants will receive active feedback from a virtual coach regarding their conversation choices and will be able to test a variety of conversation styles and gain insight into the thoughts of their virtual clients. The final simulation provides an assessment conversation where students will receive a total score, BNI adherence score, Motivational Interviewing (MI) adherence score, and adaptive feedback. Participants will also receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
Approx. time for course completion: 1 hour (can be paused/resumed at any time)
