Letter from the Director

Welcome to the NMSU School of Social Work. We are proud of our Council on Social Work Education accredited BSW and MSW programs and the faculty who teach in these programs. The NMSU School of Social Work is uniquely positioned to address the challenges of the border region and to meet the service needs of the populations of the Southwest.

Our BSW program was accredited in 1975 and we prepare students for generalist practice in a wide range of agencies ranging from health and behavioral, child welfare, family services, and work with the aged and hospice.  We typically graduate approximately 56 to 60 BSW’s a year and many of our graduates are currently working in agencies and organizations in Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, and throughout Southern and Central New Mexico.

Our MSW program was accredited in 1991 and we offer an advanced generalist curriculum at two onsite locations on the Las Cruces NMSU campus and in Albuquerque and we are now offering our full-time MSW program fully online.  Our graduates lead professional teams in multidisciplinary settings, provide leadership and supervision of others in planning and delivering services, provide specialized services, assess service delivery systems and initiate the development of needed services in the community.

We are proud to also offer a dual degree master’s program in social work and public health.

Currently, we have a full-time faculty of 12 members, one academic advisor for our MSW program and a staff of one administrative assistant. In addition, we utilize many experienced social work practitioners from the community as adjunct faculty to teach academic courses, serve as field liaisons and as agency based field instructors.

We are the only School of Social Work in New Mexico located in a research-intensive university and our faculty are actively engaged in research which enhances their teaching in the classroom.

The NMSU School of Social Work has much to offer you! We invite you to learn more about our programs and our faculty in these pages and to become part of our educational experience!

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen C. Anderson, ACSW
Interim Director and Professor Emeritus
