Opening Speaker(s): Henry Milton & Jim Harlow
HENRY MILTON-MS-CHILD DEVELOPMENT FELLOW
Henry Milton is a Child Development Fellow of the Institute of Child Development, where his primary responsibilities are to assist the Directors, Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross in regards to trainings and workshops with the Trust-Based Relational Intervention techniques.
Henry lives in Fort Worth, has been married for over 5 years, and has two children: Elijah 4yrs old and Micah 2 yrs old. Henry earned his B.S. from Texas A&M University-Commerce, TX with a major in Psychology and went on to complete his masters from Capella University in Psychology as well. Henry began working with at-risk youth in summer youth camps as a camp counselor, while in college. After college, Henry went on to work as an addiction counselor and mental health specialists, for over 12 years, with at-risk youth suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues.
JIM HARLOW, MA, LPC-INTERN- CHILD DEVELOPMENT FELLOW
Jim Harlow is an adoptive father of 5 children who have come into his family at various ages from 3 months to 15 years. They came out of differing levels of trauma and abuse with many issues related to their background. These children are now ages 28-46. Jim returned for post-graduate work after being self-employed for over 30 years, desiring to be able to utilize his experience to help and encourage others who have adopted with the challenges that they face. He received his M.A. in Counseling in 2009 and worked with adults with mental illness for 18 months before coming to the TCU Institute for Child Development. He works at the ICD as a trainer, instructing parents and professionals in Trust-Based Relational InterventionTM techniques.
Closing Speaker: Charlie Appelstein
Charlie Appelstein, MSW, is a nationally known youth care specialist and author whose primary focus is working with children and youth with emotional and behavioral issues. President of Appelstein Training Resources, Charlie trains and consults all over the United States as well as internationally, with treatment facilities, foster care programs, parent & mentor groups, schools, and detention centers. He has authored three youth care books that are widely used within the field, including No Such Thing As a Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth. His latest project is an innovative self-help CD for moms and dads titled: Parent Rapsody-Songs and Musical Mantras for Successful Parenting.
Mr. Appelstein’s books and cd’s will be available for purchase during the conference. Please be prepared to purchase with cash. It is not known, at this time, if Mr. Appelstein will accept checks or credit cards. That will be a day of the conference decision and annoucement.

Space at the Adoptive Families Conference is limited. Please register early.
To reserve your family’s space at the conference, please include a $50 deposit made payable to NMSU. When you attend the conference, the check will be returned to you. Green Initiative:
The 2012 conference information and registration process will be conducted, exclusively, interactively and online. Paper registration forms will be available to download from this site but will not be mailed out as a routine matter of course. Should you require assistance with this process, your CYFD staff, adoption liasons, or Fiesta Project contact, will be able to provide additional information and assistance.

NMSU has arranged a group rate for those attending the Adoptive Parent Conference. Call before March 25 and inform them that you are registering under the Adoptive Families Conference to receive our group rate!

Childcare Information
Childcare will be available for children and youth aged 3-18. A morning meal, lunch and snacks will be provided for the children and youth. If your child/youth has specific nutritional needs it is recommended that you bring a sack lunch for him/her.
Children, ages 3-5, will be onsite with Peanut Butter and Jelly Family Services. Please bring a change of clothes for your child, particularly if they are not potty trained. If you child uses diapers, you must provide your own diapers and wipes. While these children will be onsite, it is requested that parents not visit during breaks unless summoned by the childcare staff.
Youth, ages 6 -18, will be participating in field trip activities with the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club. The field trips will leave by 9:00am so please arrive on time. The youth will be transported by van to their respective sites.
Youth, ages 6-12, will spend the morning at ABQ Jump. The youth must have socks in order to play in the bounce houses. After lunch the youth will travel to the Albuquerque Museum of Natural History and Science for a museum tour and a planetarium show.
Youth, ages 13-18, will spend the day at the SCA Contemporary Art and Art Lab. They will participate in an art project and a magic workshop.
The field trips will return to the Pueblo Cultural Center by 4:45pm. All children and youth will be ready for parent pick up at 5:00pm.
